Located in front of the densely populated district of St. Pauli, the harbour edge offers the opportunity to extend public open spaces directly to the banks of the Elbe. It is seen as a complement to the iconic “Park Fiction”. With its vastness and green character, as well as its location directly on the riverbank, it has qualities all of its own. Clearly unsealed and with around 150 new trees planted and improved accessibility to the riverbank, the harbour edge blends naturally into the Elbe landscape axis and also references the parks and urban space. It offers a high quality of stay and a wide range of uses. Its atmosphere is characterised by the high proportion of greenery, its proximity to the riverbank and its urban location. Our vision is more park than promenade – distinctive, cosmopolitan, rugged, neighbourly. The harbour edge is being redesigned from the existing structure: the large concrete slabs and the grid derived from them are the starting point for a simple principle: slabs out, green in, everything taken out is reused. The character of the place will thus be carried forward into the future: the park lies beneath the slabs. As diverse as St. Pauli is, so too are the images and wishes projected onto the harbour edge. The wishes presented here will be integrated into the structure of the park.
