Rheinvorland, Neuss
As part of the Neuss State Garden Show 2026, the area along the banks of the Rhine was carefully enhanced: the aim was to improve its usability for the everyday lives of Neuss residents and to strengthen the city’s connection to the Rhine. The quality of the environment along the paths was improved, and the experience of the wide meadows and ruderal islands was enhanced through targeted interventions along the existing narrow footpaths. The measures are concentrated at the entrance on the town side, the harbour headland in the south-east, and the area surrounding the temporary art installation ‘Asa nisi Laga’ by artist Christian Odzuck in the northern part of the 33-hectare site. The furniture lining the paths consists of simple, robust benches developed specifically for the Laga. Five ‘lines’ of Rohrschach sandstone, each approximately 40 metres long, invite visitors into the depths of the meadows. These blend into the informal network of paths and will simultaneously develop into ‘places in the expanse’ of the Rhine foreland. Extensive wild meadow sowing with varied flowering patterns creates a diverse vegetation landscape – tailored to long-term maintenance by the City of Neuss.
