Schillingpromenade, Berlin

The Schillingpromenade, as part of the Karl-Marx-Allee settlement, was designed 65 years ago as a city space for everyone: lively, urban and representative. We are continuing this vision without interruption, only greener, more communicative and with more space for pedestrians and cyclists. This is an everyday, slow-paced, climate-adapted and communal city space with a history. The strong figure of the promenade, which runs from north to south along the entire length of the city space, is picked up and emphasised. The adjacent traffic areas are being reorganised to make it possible to expand the green areas and the area that can be used on foot. The planting areas in the middle of the Schillingpromenade, which were already present in the original design, are being widened and extended in the longitudinal direction. This creates more greenery at eye level and, in addition, a seating area along the flat border. Faceted places and inviting entrances, in harmony with the context and the existing tree canopy, structure the long promenade. The sightlines between the two pavilion buildings opposite the Kino International remain intact and are defined by the new open space structure. This creates vibrant, accessible spaces for the residents of the neighbourhood.
