The city center of Crailsheim and the expansive floodplains of the Jagst and Trutenbach rivers lie side by side in an exciting juxtaposition. The interplay between the stone city and the green floodplain has always been special—the vastness providing a pleasant contrast to the density of the city center. In addition to making it more attractive as a location for retail and events, the city center is once again becoming a livable urban space for the city's residents. A homogeneous, large-scale, and, above all, high-quality granite paving is planned for the public open spaces. This will provide a calm backdrop for the partly heterogeneous buildings and architecture, as well as for the diversity of city life in the squares and green spaces. In order to develop the city center in a sustainable manner in times of increasingly hot summers and steadily increasing heavy rainfall events, the tree population will be preserved and comprehensively supplemented – the fragments of the former ramparts and moats form essential components that are connected to each other via the green city squares. Approximately 200 trees will provide shade, including tree pits planted with flowering plants. Overall, unsealing, open-joint construction methods, light-colored surfaces, and durable and reusable materials will represent a first major step toward climate adaptation. The redesign is based on a new concept of mobility and stationary traffic. The existing parking garages compensate for the extensive loss of parking spaces in public spaces.
