Rhede’s town centre is defined by the interplay of its morphology and structure: the church square surrounding St. Gudula serves as its central heart and a key hub within the urban fabric. Three further squares follow in close succession to the south. The built environment, comprising partly historic and largely new buildings, is held together by a characteristic paving of clinker bricks. 
The design concept translates and symbolises the appreciation of Rhede’s town centre and the four town squares as the city’s ‘most public’ spaces, with their rich diversity and variety of uses. ‘4 facettes’ are four facets of a future harmoniously balanced overall picture – close together, yet distinct... Scale, spatial effect, atmosphere, green and blue. The four squares – all of them for everyone – are for everyday life and celebrations, for strolling and lingering, for encounters and gatherings. The red clinker brick paving, charmingly worn in places, a few old and many new trees forming a loose, shady canopy, plus plenty of greenery at eye level, alongside bubbling, reflective, misting and refreshing water features. A space for the urban life of tomorrow...
