Marketsquare Bürgel

Bürgel’s market square is being designed to be inviting, spacious, green and practical for everyday use. A warm red carpet of quartzite paving – typical of the region and laid in a row pattern – forms the centre of the square. The carpet, laid out opposite the town hall, is bordered by a permeable frame of tree pits planted with grasses and perennials – soothing greenery at eye level. The market square’s carpet is framed by granite paving that flows seamlessly from the surrounding area. Over 20 loosely arranged trees provide shade: over the benches at the edges of the square, on the water-bound surface by the pavilion, and over the slightly raised lawn. The views towards Bürgel Town Hall and St John’s Church remain unobstructed, and the historic row of lime trees along the southern edge of the square is extended towards the west. The redesigned market square will once again form the vibrant heart of Bürgel. The centre of the square remains flexible in its use and can be utilised in a variety of ways. There are places to relax at the shaded edges and opportunities for play on the semi-shaded lawn. Three ‘blue’ features are set to become focal points of Bürgel’s urban life: the Ceramics Pavilion, the historic fountain and the blue Bürgel bench. They serve as meeting places for visitors and residents alike, both in everyday life and during events – fostering a sense of community, sociability, creativity, local identity, collective spirit, shelter, coolness and warmth. The three features are designed collaboratively and thus help residents to feel a sense of belonging to the market square.
