Lüneburger Straße plays a special role in Harburg's urban space – despite all the changes and transformations it has undergone, it remains the central heart of the city centre. Historically and in the future, this is where people stroll and meet. The term ‘street’ alone no longer quite fits – we are designing a boulevard as a lively, public space, interacting with its urban context and brought to life by the citizens of Harburg. The urban space is designed as a social space for everyone, suitable for all generations and genders, characterised by low-threshold, diverse appropriability. It is both robust enough for everyday use and high-quality in terms of its appreciation of urban city life in public spaces. Along Lüneburger Straße, a loose sequence of different and characteristic situations and locations is emerging. The focus of the design is on their free usability and contribution to urban diversity and liveliness. The design does not serve itself or its image, but rather the common good and life in the city. The aim is to revitalise the urban space beyond opening hours: in the morning, in the evening and on Sundays – an essential quality in the everyday life of the residents of Hamburg-Harburg. Public space as a communal good.
