Ideas competition Rudolphsplatz Marburg

2011 / Ideas competition / 3rd prize / Urbanism, Public Space, Water front / 1,1 ha

At Marburg’s Weidenhäuser Bridge the green space along the riverside is reduced to a small strip between the buildings (Marburg and Weidenhausen) on the two sides of the river Lahn. This situation is special along the Lahn, a perceptible urban moment, which is the creative origin for the further design process.

The proposed buildings clearly define the city’s entrance along the Weidenhäuser Bridge and enforce the connections between different quarters and leads over the river Lahn. At the same time the buildings function as a buffer to the visual and acoustic impact of the traffic: New promising public spaces are created. The proposed volumes are adjusted to the historic context by cubature and roof form, they also define new spatial borders and urban signs. The riverside is distinguished into three atmospheres and typologies: In the south a new pedestrian bridge with a square and wide stairs down to the water is proposed. In the north an artificially formed green slope offers possibilities to sit and relax in the shade of solitary trees. In the back of the historic water mill a new river-level square is created with a soft texture and shady trees.
