Although the Marienberg, a large public park on top of a hill, is visible from afar, it barely opens itself to the surrounding city. Disjunctive land use in the transition zone between city and hill further isolate the park. Blocked views and the park’s introverted spatial setup make orientation difficult.
The concept “insights - outlooks “ is based on the idea to gently and critically restore the existing elements of the historic park and to connect them via a clearly accentuated loop walk. Being a distinct intervention and distinguishable main footpath the loop offers orientation and structure. It follows the course of the existing footpaths and topography and accesses links to the city as well as inner characteristic park areas. Important links to the city are accentuated by a change in the paving in order to further improve orientation.
The loop walk and its insights into the park connect and relate the openness of the existing plateau and main area of the park with the density and diversity of the marginal park areas and slopes. New outlooks, extensive views over the city and the surrounding landscape, set the park into context. In this manner the new Marienberg park can again become a central local recreation area for the city of Brandenburg.
