Church Square Freyburg/Unstrut

12/2011 / Realisation competition / 2nd prize / Public Space, Church Square / 7200 sqm

The churchyard of St. Mary's Church is an essential part of the historic city center of Freyburg/Unstrut. The accentuation of the church as an important Romanesque building and redesigning its environment are major components of the application for acceptance in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Despite intensive reshaping and conversion of today's church square, traces of the earlier design and use as a cemetery and its reshaping into a baroque form language are fragmentary preserved (ray-like tilings, offsets and irregularities, breaks) and allow glimpses into the history of the place. The squares multilayered character and the search for traces of history become the basis of the design work. Starting from the authentic remains our design goal is to enhance the readability of the site and to incorporate current requirements and future use options into one creative high-quality open space.

As a contrast to the edges the centre of the square is kept clear. By doing this the centre becomes a visual projection field for traces and fragments of history. The area is also kept clear of vertical fixtures, which subserves its trafficability. The contents of the projection will be determined by the results of the archeological examinations. The overlaying and synthesis of past and present uses generates an open space, which can be read and experienced in multiple ways. In addition to satisfying all functional requirements the square also subtly becomes the teller of its own story.
